  • Absent Health Care Reform, Pennsylvania’s Safety Net Costs Will Rise Sharply
    Health care reform may be expensive – but so is the status quo. The Urban Institute just released a state-by-state report, funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Without reform of the health care system, the best-case scenario is that Pennsylvania’s Medicaid programs for low-income and disabled populations will see cost increases of 52 percent over the next decade; the worst case scenario is nearly double that (101 percent).

    Robert Greenstein, the founder of Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, spoke at a GWP briefing on October 21. He offered a penetrating analysis of the budget challenges awaiting the next president and what drives the federal budget (including escalating health care costs, tax policies, defense spending and Social Security as “baby boomers” age). His projection: the deepest recession since the early 1980s is likely on the horizon.
  • Charities Can Expect New Regulations and Increased Giving in an Obama Administration
    Changes in the tax structure that provide greater incentive to give, as well as regulations increasing accountability, are likely to be proposed by president-elect Obama and the new administration according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Senators Max Baucus (D-Montana) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) are also considering hearings on the use of overseas tax shelters by universities and other endowment holders.
