From Philanthropy to Shared Value

In this Forbes blog post, John Lechleiter (CEO of Eli Lilly and Company) traces the evolution of philanthropy from conventional giving to the expanded concept of creating shared value.  As he points out, “Traditional giving has its limits.  Solving more complicated challenges usually demands more than money. Plus, depending on philanthropy alone is rarely a sustainable strategy.”  He applauds the shift to smarter corporate community engagement that makes it possible for businesses to use employees’ skills and other resources to address more ambitious challenges.
